Core Engagement Competency Workshops (First Requirement)
The first requirement for the Graduate Certification in Community Engagement is the core engagement competency workshop.
Students usually fulfill this requirement by attending workshops coordinated by University Outreach and Engagement. Workshops will be offered in two, two-day, in-person institutes.
The Fall Institute covers half of the competencies: history, disciplinary variations, principles and practice, partnerships, collaboration techniques, reflective practice, engaging diverse communities, ethics, and types of community engaged scholarship.
The Spring Institute covers the remaining ones: evaluation, peer review, public/practitioner communications, academic communications, documentation, and career strategies.
Students are required to attend both institutes; however, they may attend them in different academic years if they choose.
Once students are accepted into the program, location and registration details will be shared.
For 2024-2024, the Fall Institute will be full days on September 20-21, 2024. The Spring Institute will again be full days January 24-25, 2025.
Students who have completed coursework that addresses a particular core engagement competency may ask to have the syllabi, reading lists, and assignments evaluated as potential alternatives to the required workshops. Contact the program coordinator to request such a review.
Students who miss workshop have the option to make them up asynchronously.
